Being skint is all part of being a student and not having piles of cash doesn't mean you have to miss out on quality student accommodation. Sheffield has some real bargain houses and flats to choose from and with a bit of budgeting, some research and these top tips below you can be sure of a decent deal...
If you can find accommodation which will house yourself and a few of your mates then you may find the rent is cheaper than renting smaller student accommodation. Sheffield has a huge range of maisonettes which can house multiple people at a price which is much lower than renting a smaller flat on your own. There are plenty of large flats in popular areas of Sheffield such as Broomhill and Ecclesall Road which have loads of facilities right on the doorstep.
If you fancy yourself as a bit of a Phil Spencer or Kirstie Allsopp then it's always worth negotiating on the price of rent for your student accommodation. Sheffield locals do tend to be quite direct though so if your landlord is not keen on your attempts at lowering the price you'll soon find out about it. On the plus side though, it's always worth asking for a discount, especially if the accommodation has a few downsides such as damp or is in need of redecorating for example.
Sometimes choosing accommodation which is a little further out than the student hotspots can save you cash. If you like a place which has decent transportation links but isn't in one of the more popular areas, then provided you can get to uni and there are a few good pubs around, it would definitely be worth considering. Areas to try out include Heeley, Kelham Island, Abbeydale Road and Hillsborough.
Usually a landlord will ask you for references from previous landlords or estate agents, which is fair enough but how do you know if your landlord is legit? If it's a well known firm then check out online forums or ask around to see how reliable and trustworthy they are. If it's an independent landlord then ask them for references from previous tenants before you sign anything or at the very least see if you can meet them in person or speak to their existing tenants to get a feel of how reliable they are.
If you're getting a good deal on your accommodation check it's not too good to be true by scrutinising the lease for your student accommodation. Sheffield has an excellent range of student accommodation specialists so make these companies the first places you visit so you can compare contracts and prices with independent landlords. If in doubt ask someone with property or legal experience to read over the lease.
